WALKING AND EXPLORING IN KEFALONIA

There are many hundreds of ancient tracks that crisscross the island of Kefalonia.  Some are well signed and marked and some of them are definitely not!

GREEK TOURISM WALKING TRAIL INFORMATION BOARDS

More and more trails are being marked with Tourism Information Boards and with painted BLUE/WHITE markers placed along the way.

UNESCO has designated the Kefalonia/Ithaca area as a GEOPARK.  This signifies a rich cultural heritage with important geodiversity and biodiversity.   You can access many walks with the aid of the Geopark Network (accessible on your mobile), explaining the area and its geological make up.

Some of the recommended routes are:

Five caves – from the top of The Walnut Tree villa track towards Karavomylos

Above Agia Efimia – around the Monastery of Thermata

Grizata Gorge – a watermill walk in a gorge near Sami

Ancient waterway and lake – with a further Gorge Walk with watermills near Agia Nikolaos (off the Sami to Poros road)

Amazing views whilst exploring around Assos Castle – with a secret swim afterwards

Take your pick of all the National Parks on the island (Mount Aenos and Mount Roudi) – endlessly beautiful views of the mainland, Zante and beyond with rugged walking and extraordinary wildlife including wild horses!
